Hillel Slovack, Jack Irons, Anthony Kiedis et Michael Balzary formaient à l'origine les Anthym.
Ce n'est qu'à partir de 1983 et de multiples changement de postes dans différents groupes que nos compères rebaptisent leur groupe The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Après le décès de Hillel d'une overdose en juin 1988, grand ami de Jack et d'Anthony avec qui il se droguait, John Frusciante intégre le groupe à à peine 18 ans la même année, considéré comme le "clone absolu" du guitariste défunt, grâce à son style très ressemblant du fait qu'il soit un grand fan du groupe.
Chad Smith les rejoindra début 1989, remarqué à un concert de Public Ennemy.
